Cancelling a direct debit can be done at any point of time and the process involved in it is simple. The customer has to just contact their building society or bank about cancelling the facility. The customer can inform the bank either by email or by telephone or by directly visiting the bank’s office. In any case the bank would require the customer to give a written confirmation about the cancellation of the direct debit facility. It will be better if a copy of this written communication is sent to the organization that had been using this direct debit service for collecting their amount. Some direct debit service Company even have a standard letter format which can be referred to while giving the written confirmation. When a customer wants the facility cancelled it is better that the customer informs the bank well in advance of the due date.
Though the bank will try to make the cancellation before the due date, it is better that the customer doesn’t wait till due date and run the risk of a payment being deducted from the account directly. After cancelling the direct debit facility it is better that the customer checks the subsequent bank statements to make sure that the account is not disturbed so that if there is any error the amount can be immediately refunded.
